NSPCC - Little Stars

NSPCC invited people across the UK to be a part of Oxford Street’s world famous Christmas lights display through its Little Stars fundraising campaign, where it asked people to name a light on the street for someone special, and making a suggested £5 donation, to help to keep little stars across the country safe and happy. We were asked to Design and Develop a fully responsive web application that could help them bring the magic of Christmas to life and enable people to donate money and share stars with friends and family.

The Build

The Front-End for Little Stars was developed as a Single Page Application using a combination of ReactJS and Redux. We needed a simple and organised way to manage application state and Redux matched our requirements perfectly. In combination with ReactJS we used Webpack as our build tool, bundling all of our namespaced modules into production ready files.

For our Styles, we followed the BEM methodology, enforcing a shared naming convention across the team. All animations, including the horizontal parallax effect were developed with a combination of JavaScript and CSS techniques, including 3D Transforms where possible, to ensure smoother transitions across our supported devices and browser matrix.

My Role

• Technical Lead and Front End Developer.
• Liaised with key stakeholders, UX and Design Teams, providing estimates, scoping and technical oversight to the UX/UI Design process.
• Creation of a boilerplate during Sprint 0 to help fast track development and ensure the more complex animation, functionality and state logic was tested/validated before core work began.
• Oversaw the build from start to finish, ensuring everything was developed on time, to budget and perfectly aligned with the UX/UI requirements and our own strict, internal coding standards

This project was a huge success when it launched, receiving great praise including an Inspirational Site award in .Net Magazine.
